Under the direction of the Maintenance Supervisor to perform locksmith duties and install and maintain the associated hardware; liaise with various staff regarding the installation and maintenance of keying systems; and weld and maintain steel doors and frames. 

Major Duties:

1. Provide Assistance To The Board With Locksmithing And The Installation And Maintenance Of Associated Hardware

  • Responsible for re-keying various types of locks;
  • Install locks and perform any necessary repairs to ensure they are in working condition;
  • Installing security devices
  • Responsible for setting-up and maintaining master key systems; manage high-security key systems, ie. Primus and high-precision machinery to ensure the systems are working correctly;
  • Installation and signing authority for the high-security Primus System
  • Responsible for impressioning locks;
  • Responsible for ensuring that keys are cut appropriately according to standards and codes;
  • Install and repair various hardware, including door closers and panic bars.
  • Assessing spec's for new schools and inputting recommendations
  • Responsible for magnetic locks, card access readers, electronic strikes, key over-ride systems - high security systems, restricted security systems and complete aluminum door service systems;
  • Ordering all materials and supplies via Pcard and pick up of blanket PO;
  • Coordinating portable moves in the summer and keying moved portables to the new site system;
  • Receives and updates work orders and complete/submits time sheets electronically.

2. Liaise With Various Staff Regarding The Installation And Maintenance Of Keying Systems

  • Coordinate decisions and educate the staff involved regarding the installation and maintenance of keying systems, as well as the distribution of keys for the system with the following individuals: Principals, Custodians, Supervisors, Suppliers, Teachers;
  • Coordinate the needs of the parties involved with the contractors
  • Personally deal with the fire department and the fire prevention officer;
  • Estimate materials needed for the operation of the system chosen and order the materials, as assigned;
  • Work on a computerized system to maintain records for all master key systems;
  • Review all new drawings and sketches on how jobs are to be performed.

3. Weld And Maintain Metal Doors and Frames

  • Responsible for installation, repair and servicing of steel wood and aluminum doors and frames; hollowing metal doors and frames and welding steel doors and frames;
  • Install, service, and repair metal doors and frames so that they meet Building and Fire Codes and general safety standards;
  • Weld doors, hinge pockets, extract broken screws, fabricate old equipment and parts as required;
  • Assist carpenters in cutting door's etc;
  • Assisting glazier in unloading large pieces of glass from orders;
  • Maintain contractors' key cabinets for every school;

Equipment Used: Computer/printer, word processor, photocopier, hand tools (saw, hammer, etc.), power tools (saw, drill, etc.), welding equipment, electrical equipment, small locksmithing tools, advanced key-cutting equipment, plasma-cutting equipment and a truck.

Qualifications:

  • Secondary School Diploma (or equivalent) and successful completion of locksmithing courses and/or certifications in areas such as keying, advanced hardware, locksmithing, and/or Medeco systems.
  • Valid Ontario Welder (456A) Certificate of Qualification.
  • 1-2 year of related employment experience;
  • Keyboarding skills would be an asset and familiarity with using a computerized system for recording information.
  • Carpentry skills and electrical skills would be an asset to perform the required installation of hinges, switches, etc.
  • Sound knowledge of School/Board safety standards, the Ontario Building code and Fire code.
  • Must be able to lift and move heavy materials, perform tasks requiring fine motor coordination, work in a variety of weather conditions, including extreme temperatures, and safely grip and operate a range of hand and power tools.
  • Class G driver's licence in good standing, travelling to different schools is required;
  • Ability to communicate effectively with board staff, colleagues, other trades, suppliers and the public.
  • Evening and day shift is a requirement of this position.

Additional Information:

  • This is a 40 hour per week, temporary opportunity available until approximately December 31, 2027.
  • This is a day shift position. 
  • Provide a current criminal record and judicial matters check (CRJMC) screening upon hire.
